About Insurance

Risk explained

The world is an uncertain place and the risks associated with conducting business are increasingly complex. Risk is a threat, but it's also an opportunity. The greater the risk, the greater the potential opportunity.

So while businesses seek out and accept risk in order to grow, it needs to be managed. And that's where insurance comes in. The industry assesses prices and manages risk on behalf of clients, allowing them to get on with what they do best, safe in the knowledge that they're covered against worst-case scenarios.

A vital part of the UK economy

The UK insurance industry is the third largest in the world and the largest in Europe. It manages investments of £1.9 trillion – 25% of the UK's total net worth – and contributes over £12 billion in taxes. Employing around 330,000 people, it is one of this country's major exporters, with the UK and long term savings industry generating almost a quarter of total EU premium income.

Did you know?

  • Property insurers pay out an average of £12.9m per day to repair homes and replace contents.
  • 3m consumers have their pets insured, with around 95% of insurance being for cats and dogs.
  • The average bodily injury claim following an accident costs £10,680.
  • Liability insurers pay out £8.9m every day to protect businesses, which in turn, preserves jobs.

Shaping the future

The industry is working with the Government to help reduce flood risk, drive reform of the personal injury compensation scheme, and leading universities on research projects such as Systematic Risk Modelling. Adopting more innovative thinking and forging collaborative partnerships with governments and other service providers to solve the problem of underinsurance.

About You

It takes a certain sort of person to thrive in such a dynamic environment, both in terms of fitting in with the team and being a success. Being in a challenging and constantly changing business will stretch you in ways you never thought possible. We demand a lot. But then we give a lot in return. The question is: have you got what it takes?

We're looking for the next generation of business leaders. Those with the credibility to gain respect from their colleagues even at the earliest stages of their career. People for whom the values of integrity and teamwork are more than just words in a corporate code. Individuals who want to be part of an organisation where these things genuinely matter and who have the drive and intellectual capacity to succeed.

We are looking to recruit and select up to 12 graduates for our offices in the UK, Europe, Zurich and Bermuda. You may have recently graduated with at least a 2:1 or international equivalent. More importantly, we're interested in your personality and your potential. You're intellectually curious, highly creative and unswervingly driven. The sort of person who is confident mixing at every level and not afraid to speak up.

You will need to be flexible, have an international mind-set and be able to thrive in a changing environment. We are a global business and the graduate placements will be based in any one of our main offices during the graduate programme.

You may not have considered that your future lay in the world of insurance. But then you may not have realised exactly how much it has to offer. Until now.

The Graduate Programme

Our globally structured, two year rotational programme will give you exposure to all areas of the business including underwriting, claims, finance and risk management. At this stage, we don't want you to specialise in any one area in particular – that will come later. We want you to get a feel for how each part of the organisation functions and fits.

You'll get involved with special projects and will have the opportunity to work in at least two or more locations across the Group, including London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Zurich, Paris or Bermuda. There will be plenty of learning and development opportunities covering technical and behavioural skills as well as regular feedback and progress reviews. That's what we mean when we say continual professional development.

Whilst we want you to take responsibility, do a real job and start putting your own ideas forward from day one, we don't expect you to do that without support. Which is why you'll have a senior-level mentor to use as a sounding board throughout the programme. You'll also have the chance to network with other graduates from across the business as well as those who have been on our previous programmes.

The ultimate aim of the programme is to equip you with the skills, knowledge and understanding to become one of MS Amlin's next generation of business leaders and underwriters.

To Apply

If you think differently - like us – and are interested in a management or underwriting career in the insurance industry, we'd love to hear from you.

Firstly, complete the short application form below and attach your CV. At this stage, the main thing we want to know is… What makes you different?

If we like what we see, we'll arrange a telephone interview to discuss your application in more depth.

If that goes well, there will be a recruitment process that will vary depending on location – you will be given details of this at a later stage. For the UK it will involve an invitation to an assessment day which will include psychometric tests, group exercises, a one to one interview as well as a short presentation.

Our recruitment processes will give us the chance to learn more about you and give you the opportunity to find out if MS Amlin is right for you.
